And that Good Faith Estimate you get early on is just a big joke with no penalty I can find if the lender adds a lot of stuff later...

Go to Bankrate.com and look up loan costs for your area so you can see what typical closing costs should be. If there seem to be bogus fees -- complain and call their bluff.

Also, call the National Mortgage Complaint Center (866-714-6466) and for $45 will locate excessive fees.
